Thomas A'Becket Infant School

Children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)
Thomas A’ Becket Infant School is proud of inclusive and nurturing curriculum and environment.
We ensure that children with additional needs feel supported, understood and are included in all areas of school. This is the cornerstone of our school’s approach where we believe that every child, whatever their individual needs, deserves high quality, inclusive teaching that helps them make meaningful progress and feel truly valued as part of our school family.
Our aim is to understand each child as an individual, respond to their needs in the most thoughtful and effective way and celebrate both their efforts and achievements. Above all, we want our children to grow into self-assured, resilient and capable individuals who know their strengths and believe in themselves.
We provide a wide range of additional support for pupils with many different types of Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), including:
Cognition and Learning - This includes difficulties with learning at a typical pace, such as moderate learning difficulties, as well as specific learning differences like dyslexia, dyscalculia and dyspraxia.
Sensory and/or Physical Needs - This covers visual or hearing impairments, physical disabilities, sensory processing differences and medical conditions that affect a child’s access to learning, such as epilepsy.
Communication and Interaction - This includes Autistic Spectrum Condition (ASC), social communication differences, and speech, language and communication needs that may affect how children understand or use language.
Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) - This includes a range of needs linked to emotional wellbeing, behaviour or mental health, such as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) or difficulties with regulating emotions.
Our Inclusion Team is led by our experienced Inclusion Leader, Ms Teresa Bourne (tbourne@tabinfant.org.uk). The team also includes our Assistant SENDCo, a SEND administrator and a group of highly experienced Learning Support Assistants working across each year group. Together, they bring a wealth of knowledge and compassion - assessing children’s needs, planning and delivering tailored support, monitoring progress and offering exceptional provision and care to help every child thrive.
